Welcome!
This blog is my Cultural Competence Toolbox a collection of ideas, tools, and resources to help support children and families from diverse backgrounds. Cultural competence is something we grow over time, and it's important because our students and families come from many different cultures, languages, family structures, and experiences.

What is Cultural Competence?

Cultural competence means being able to understand, respect, and work well with children and families from all backgrounds. It’s a skill we keep learning and improving because our classrooms are always changing. New students may speak different languages, celebrate different holidays, or come from unique family structures. As teachers, we must stay open-minded, flexible, and ready to connect with every child and family in meaningful, respectful ways.

What Cultural Competence Looks Like in Practice

Without Cultural CompetenceWith Cultural Competence
Assumes all families are the same        Embraces diverse family structures
Uses only English materials        Includes home languages
Celebrates one culture’s holidays        Celebrates many cultures and traditions
Avoids conversations about identity        Encourages open and respectful dialogue

Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory
In class, we created our own version of this theory. It helped me understand that children are influenced by many layers  family, school, community, culture, and even laws and traditions. This reminds me to look at the whole child and their environment when I teach, not just their behavior or skills in the classroom.

This is my version of Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory. It shows how children are shaped by many layers in their life starting with family and school (microsystem) all the way out to society and laws (macrosystem). This helps me understand each child’s full story and the influences that affect them.
